Your phone is your lifeline in Japan. These are the apps that make daily life significantly easier as a foreigner.
Navigation & Transport
Google Maps
Still the best for general navigation in Japan. Walking, cycling, driving, and public transit directions are accurate. Download offline maps for areas with poor signal.
Yahoo! カーナビ (Yahoo Car Navigation)
If you drive in Japan, this beats Google Maps. Real-time traffic data is more accurate, and it handles Japanese roads better.
Navitime / Jorudan
For detailed train and bus route planning. Better than Google Maps for complex transfers and shows platform numbers, fare breakdowns, and reserved seat options.
HyperDia
The classic train route planner. More detailed than consumer apps — shows all available trains including limited express and Shinkansen options with exact fares.
Translation & Language
Google Translate
Indispensable. The camera mode lets you point your phone at Japanese text and see an instant overlay translation — menus, signs, documents.
DeepL
Better translation quality than Google for complex sentences. Essential for translating official documents or correspondence.
Takoboto / Jisho
Japanese-English dictionary apps. Takoboto has excellent kanji lookup (draw the character or use camera recognition).
Food & Delivery
Uber Eats Japan
Wide coverage in major cities, many restaurants offer English menus in the app. Useful when you’re sick or too tired to go out.
Demae-can (出前館)
Japan’s largest food delivery app (owned by Line). More local restaurants than Uber Eats but interface is mostly Japanese.
Tabelog
Japan’s Yelp. Best for finding quality restaurants, viewing menus, and reading reviews. Ratings are strict — 3.5 on Tabelog is considered excellent.
Retty
Restaurant recommendation app with a more social feel than Tabelog. Good for trending spots.
Payments & Finance
PayPay
Japan’s most popular mobile payment app. Accepted almost everywhere — convenience stores, restaurants, taxis, supermarkets. Link your bank account or credit card.
Rakuten Pay
Good alternative to PayPay, especially if you use Rakuten services. Points accumulate quickly.
Wise (Wise App)
For sending money internationally at real exchange rates. Far cheaper than bank transfers.
LINE Pay
Useful for splitting bills with Japanese friends who already use Line.
Communication
LINE
Japan’s dominant messaging platform. You must have this — it’s how Japanese people message, share photos, and even conduct business. Also has free voice and video calls.
Zoom / Google Meet
Standard for remote work. Many Japanese companies use Teams or Zoom.
Shopping
Amazon Japan
The easiest online shopping experience, especially if your Japanese is limited. Ships fast, easy returns.
Mercari
Japan’s biggest second-hand marketplace. Incredible deals on electronics, furniture, clothing. Many listings have photos where language matters less.
Rakuten Ichiba
Japan’s largest e-commerce platform. More sellers than Amazon but less polished. Good for specialty items.
Health & Emergency
NHK World
English news and emergency alerts about typhoons, earthquakes, and disasters. Essential.
Safety tips (セーフティチップス)
Government-backed app that sends disaster alerts in English. Highly recommended to install.
Yuuniwa
Find English-speaking doctors and clinics near you.
Housing & Local Services
Suumo / Homes.jp
Japan’s biggest real estate apps. Searching in Japanese gets you more listings.
ゴミ出しカレンダー (Garbage Collection Calendar)
Many municipalities have apps for garbage collection schedules. Check your city’s app store.
Japan Post App
Track packages, find post offices, and schedule redelivery of missed packages.
