Living in Japan gives you a massive advantage for learning Japanese — immersion is the best teacher. Here’s what actually works, from complete beginner to conversational.

Start Here: Learn Hiragana and Katakana First

Before anything else, learn the two phonetic alphabets:

  • Hiragana (ひらがな) — 46 characters, used for Japanese words
  • Katakana (カタカナ) — 46 characters, used for foreign words

Both can be learned in 1–2 weeks with daily practice. Once you can read these, everything opens up — menus, signs, apps.

Best tool for this: Duolingo (first few lessons) or a free site like Tofugu’s hiragana/katakana guides.

Apps

Anki (Free)

The most powerful flashcard app. Uses spaced repetition — shows you cards just before you’d forget them. Used by serious learners worldwide.

  • Download pre-made Japanese decks (Core 2000, Core 6000 vocabulary)
  • Available on PC, Android (free), iOS (paid)
  • Steep learning curve but unmatched for vocabulary building

Duolingo (Free / Premium)

Good for absolute beginners. Gamified, low friction, keeps you consistent. Not enough on its own for fluency but good for daily habit-building.

Bunpro (Subscription)

Grammar-focused app with spaced repetition. Covers JLPT N5–N1 grammar. Great complement to vocabulary apps.

HelloTalk / Tandem (Free)

Connect with Japanese speakers learning your language — language exchange. Excellent for real conversation practice. Free and widely used in Japan.

Textbooks

Genki (Beginner–Intermediate)

The standard university textbook. Genki I and II take you from zero to N4 level. Structured, clear explanations, good exercises.

  • Buy at Amazon Japan, Kinokuniya bookstores, or online
  • Companion workbooks available
  • Textbook: ~¥3,000–¥4,000

Minna no Nihongo (Beginner)

Popular in language schools. More immersive than Genki — explanations are in Japanese from the start. Often used in group classes.

Japanese the Manga Way (Beginner)

Grammar explained through manga panels. Good for visual learners. Fun supplement to main study materials.

Community Classes

Many city halls and community centers (kominkan, 公民館) offer cheap or free Japanese classes for foreign residents. Often taught by volunteers. Check your local city hall.

Private Tutors

Find tutors via:

  • iTalki — italki.com — online lessons with Japanese teachers

  • Local community boards and LINE groups

Cost: ¥1,500–¥3,000/hour for community lessons, ¥2,000–¥5,000/hour for professional tutors.

Living in Japan: How to Maximize Immersion

  • Change your phone to Japanese — forces daily reading practice
  • Watch Japanese TV and YouTube — with subtitles at first
  • Talk to your neighbors and local shopkeepers — low-stakes practice
  • Use Google Translate camera for reading signs and menus — but try to read before checking
  • Keep a small notebook for new words you see daily

JLPT: Japanese Language Proficiency Test

The JLPT is the standard certification for Japanese ability, from N5 (beginner) to N1 (near-native). Useful for resumes and visa applications.

LevelAbility
